A monarch (or wanderer as some in Australia call it), Danaus plexippus, sitting on a thistle at the Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve.

With some leaves, it’s the fine structure I like. With this one however, the subtle colour gradient is just as nice.

Australasian Gannet I

Muriwai Beach in the North of Auckland, New Zealand, is home to a colony of Australasian Gannets (Morus serrator). Watching the birds was a wonderful experience, as you can get very close to the colony and watch their complex social behaviour. It’s also a great opportunity for photos of course, but shooting birds in flight with a focal length of 400mm (in film terms) is quite challenging! This bird was about to land on the rock beneath.

This little spider was discovered by chance when I was about to take a picture of the flower – I certainly wouldn’t have seen it from a meter away!

Careful crab

This crab decided to play it safe and waited more than 5 minutes until it came out again after hiding when I approached. I got down on the sand, lying there (and drawing the attention of some beach walkers) with my arms slowly getting numb until the crab stuck its head out. After three shots I decided to change the frame a bit, but even this minimal movement prompted the crab to vanish again. With the people approaching and happily chatting away, I knew the opportunity was over and I had to be happy I got at least some photos! On top of this, I still don’t know the name of this crab and couldn’t find it looking around online, so if you happen to know please leave a comment. The picture was taken on the beach at Labrador, QLD.

While some of my Leaf structure series photos show a very fine and fragile structure, I really like how this one looks quite rough and hardy. Indeed, the leaf is rather sturdy and the structure can easily be felt when touching it.

A closer look at the Gazania seen earlier. The colour gradients and transitions are just as great as the texture on the petals.

The little spot of colour in the otherwise dry and brown underbrush really stood out. I also like the contrast of the fragile-looking flower and the rough edges on the twigs at the top!

I really love the colour of the eyes and the single grains of sand on its head! Luckily the Zuiko 35mm Macro lens does a good job, even though it is such an affordable lens.

Gazania I

The first time I remember seeing a Gazania was two years ago, and the photo (not good enough to publish) is still in my archive! So when I encountered it again here, I gave it another go. I also had a look at the plant’s origin (South Africa) and found a nice little story about its name: according to Wikipedia (citing a Taxon article by Howis et al.) it was named after translator(!), Theodorus Gaza.
